Welcome to the Pediatric ED, where specialized care meets child-friendly comfort. Here you’ll find a dedicated space for our smallest patients.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Cape Fear Valley Health

CFVH’s Pediatric ER is a specialized department within our hospital dedicated exclusively to treating emergencies in children. Unlike regular ERs, our Pediatric ER is tailored to understand and address the unique medical needs of young patients, from infants to teenagers.

Pediatric emergency medicine involves providing swift and specialized care for sudden illnesses or injuries that children may face. It's not just about treating smaller bodies. Our providers also understand the specific ways children react to illness, injury and even treatment itself.

Our Pediatric ER is equipped with advanced medical technologies and staffed by professionals with additional rigorous training in pediatric care. Our team has the expertise and experience to provide the best possible emergency care to children.

This specialized focus often results in less distress for the child, fewer tests and a more family-centric approach to emergencies. When your child is in a crisis, we’re ready to offer the most informed, compassionate and efficient care possible.

Should I Bring My Child to the ED?

Recognizing when your child needs emergency care is vital. Bring your child to the ER if they experience:

  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • A sudden severe headache
  • A significant head injury
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Signs of dehydration like not urinating for 12 hours
  • A seizure that lasts longer than usual
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Sudden, intense pain
  • Consuming a toxic substance or medication

Your child’s pediatrician or insurance company may offer a nurse line. These can help you decide the best place for your child to get care.

Always trust your instincts. If you believe your child's health is in serious danger, it's better to be safe and seek immediate medical attention.
