What to Expect With Inpatient Behavioral Health Services
Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Care is a specialized facility for adults with serious mental health issues who need intensive care and support. The unit is an acute, crisis-intervention setting. The team provides a structured and stable program in a safe environment. It has a low patient-to-staff ratio.
What to expect during your stay at inpatient care
Most rooms are semi-private (double occupancy). Staff may decide to arrange single occupancy based on special circumstances.
Admission
During the admission process, you’ll complete admission paperwork and a brief physical (head-to-toe skin assessment). Then the clinical staff will orient you to the facility and the program. They will show you to your room and make sure you feel comfortable.
Program participation
You’re encouraged to attend and participate in all groups and activities. We’ll review the daily schedule with you, and it’s also displayed in numerous areas on the unit.
Treatment plan
Our highly qualified and dedicated team will work with you throughout your stay. The team will complete various assessments and develop a plan of care based on the results. All treatment services are designated to restore patients to optimal level of functioning in the community. We use the least restrictive methods appropriate to the patient’s individualized needs.
A therapeutic setting called milieu
A milieu (pronounced mill-you) is the community or environment that you will be part of while on the unit. It’s a well-structured therapeutic setting that’s under direct and continuous supervision by staff.
Milieu therapy is the therapeutic modality we use to offer patients a sense of security and comfort. The formal and structured aspects of milieu therapy include:
- Therapeutic groups and programming
- Unit activities
- Unit rules
- The overall unit environment
Our staff make frequent rounds to ensure the safety of all patients on the unit and are available to provide you with support and encouragement. You will find that this environment will serve as a place to learn about yourself and practice skills that will help you. Our goal is to prepare you for a safe and successful discharge.
Discharge
A patient’s hospitalization lasts until the patient is ready to transition into an appropriate outpatient setting. The length of stay usually ranges from three to seven days, based on these factors:
- Reason for admission
- Progress made at the facility
- Community resources available to your family
At Cape Fear Valley Health, we’re here to help you during treatment, recovery and ongoing care. Feel free to communicate with our staff and ask questions.
