About the Area

Fayetteville is the seat of Cumberland County, NC. According to the 2020 Census, it has a population of 208,000, making it the sixth largest city in NC. Fayetteville is adjacent to Fort Bragg, the largest military installation in the world and home to the US Army’s 82nd Airborne and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Residents can enjoy hiking through the Cape Fear River trails, visiting Veterans Park and the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens, shopping in the revitalized historic downtown district, or Visiting Segra Stadium, home of the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, a single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. Over 250,000 fans took in the home games last year alone.  There is also a local hockey team, college football, and soccer. Fayetteville has been recognized four times as an “All-American City” by the National Civic League.

To the west are the North Carolina Mountains, which offer the highest peaks on the east coast of the US, with opportunities for hiking and camping through the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, The Cherokee, Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests, and of course the Appalachian Trail. Warm weather whitewater rafting is also available as well as skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Historic cities such as Asheville as well as the renowned Biltmore Estate as located here as well.

To the east, North Carolina offers some of the best beaches on the entire east coast, including the Outer Banks, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Kitty Hawk, the location of the Wright Brothers first flight. Closer still are beach communities with lots of activities in less than a two-hour drive from Fayetteville.

Fayetteville has a regional airport with daily service by major airlines, and RDU International Airport is just over an hour to our north, offering flights to many locations worldwide. In summary, in about two to three hours either by car or by plane, you can be in the mountains, at the beach, or in New York or Miami.  Great location, with lots to do locally and easy travel to many other places for even just a long weekend!  It is no wonder that we have had fifteen residents from our first five classes choose to stay and work here when they graduated.
