The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is located on the 5th floor and is part of The Children’s Center. Our staff have cared for nearly 1,500 critically ill and injured children annually.

Our Approach to PICU Care

The pediatric intensive care unit is a specialized center that cares for infants, children and adolescents with a vast range of serious conditions. Our highly skilled doctors and nurses are trained in the most advanced interventions and treatments.

What you can expect

Children (0-17 years of age) get close observation and intensive medical care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Cape Fear Valley Health has a wide variety of healthcare specialists who are competent in a PICU environment. These compassionate specialists include experienced critical care pediatricians, respiratory therapists and mid-levels that may include nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

When your child is admitted to the PICU, you will be given a PIN number. The PIN number is required when you call the PICU to get a report on your child’s condition. The PICU phone line is open 24 hours a day for your convenience.

Our PICU specializes in the highest levels of care

Our pediatric medical team provides expert lifesaving and life-support treatment. Children who are extremely unwell and need careful monitoring as well as more intensive medical and nursing care to speed their recovery are placed in the PICU. Many counties in Southeast North Carolina contribute to the patient population. The nurses who work in the PICU are experienced in caring for the sickest children in the hospital. They're the people most closely involved with the minute-to-minute care of the kids.
