Community Outreach

The CARE Clinic

The resident has the opportunity to provide pharmacy services at The CARE Clinic throughout the residency year. The CARE Clinic is a free health clinic that provides free dental and medical care to the underserved, low income, and uninsured population of Fayetteville and the surrounding areas. The clinic pharmacy is staffed by a pharmacist and two volunteer technicians. Resident responsibilities include verifying prescriptions, communicating formulary and drug information to providers and clinic staff, and providing medication education to patients. Dinner is provided at 5 p.m. prior to volunteering for the evening. The PGY1 resident will provide services one evening every six weeks at a minimum. The Community-Based residents will provide services one evening every month. Should the resident like to volunteer more often, that can be arranged by contacting the Residency Program Director/Coordinator.

Better Health

Better Health is a non-profit organization that strives to bridge gaps in health care services for Cumberland County residents and surrounding areas through various programs involving diabetes education and management, childhood obesity prevention, loans of medical equipment, and assistance with emergency medical needs (e.g., critical prescriptions, dental care, vision care). Residents teach the medication presentation to a small group of patients during the seven-week Take Charge of Diabetes class that occurs Mondays and Thursdays throughout the year. Residents are also involved with brown bag days offered in the fall and spring and have the opportunity to teach patients at the annual Diabetes Symposium in November.

Team Building

Resident Social Events

The purpose of these events is to encourage and enhance relationship development between the residents and the preceptors outside of the work environment. The residency social events have been a great way to get to know each other and serve as a time to de-stress and have fun. We have enjoyed events such as cooking classes, game nights, bowling nights, escape rooms, gift exchanges, cookie exchanges, Minute-To-Win-It games, etc. The opportunities are endless, and the evenings are always filled with laughter and fun.

Team Building

During the first month of orientation, the pharmacy residents spend a day at Camp Rockfish in Parkton, N.C. The day serves to unite the incoming residents as they work together as a team in order to solve puzzles and complete various obstacle courses. The goal of this exercise is to introduce the incoming residents and build a foundation of trust, camaraderie, and friendship that will continue to grow throughout the residency year. The pharmacy residency budget is responsible for covering the expenses related to this event.
