Ready to take the next step in your nursing career
Overview
Surgical nurses (perioperative or operating room nurses) play a vital role in patient care before, during and after surgery. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, ambulatory surgery care centers. Pre-testing and pre-operative nurses work with patients to complete paperwork, prepare patients for surgery, answer questions and calm fears. During surgery, operating room nurses maintain a safe, sterile environment. They may handle instruments, equipment, and supplies, and assist the surgeon and anesthetist as needed. Postoperative nurses monitor patients’ level of recovery and consciousness from anesthesia, treat pain and nausea, and facilitate discharge or admission for recovery.
