We understand facing breast cancer can feel scary and lonely. But at Cape Fear Valley Health, you’ll have a team in your corner every step of the way.

Our Approach to Breast Cancer Care

When you have a breast cancer diagnosis, we know you don’t want to wait to start your care. Our goal is to get you in as quickly as possible.

At your first appointment, you’ll typically meet with a breast cancer surgeon who will:

  • Explain the type and stage of your breast cancer
  • Guide you through your treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, radiation therapy and more
  • Discuss our team approach to your care, including the specialists involved and how we all work together

Your Care Team

Your breast cancer care team may include breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons and others. Your team will meet regularly, bringing together their shared expertise to drive your care. This also ensures your whole team is on the same page. So, whenever you see any provider, they’ll focus on your immediate needs — rather than getting up to speed on your care plan.

One of the most important members of your team will be your nurse navigator. They’ll make sure you’re getting everything you need, exactly when you need it.

Your navigator will:

  • Schedule and coordinate your appointments
  • Address any challenges, such as insurance complications, scheduling and more
  • Connect you with any cancer support services, as needed
  • Follow up with you after appointments
  • Check in if you miss an appointment, asking if you’re OK and what we can do to help

Why Choose Cape Fear Valley Health for Breast Cancer Care?

A team focused on you

With breast cancer, you may need more than one treatment from more than one specialist. All of our breast cancer specialists meet weekly to discuss care plans. We plan your treatment together, ensuring it’s tailored to your specific needs.

Expertise in breast surgery

We understand that breast cancer surgery — including mastectomy and lumpectomy [DM1] — can be both physically and emotionally difficult. Our breast surgeons specialize in oncoplastic techniques, which preserve as much of your breast tissue possible. This helps you recover faster from surgery and with less noticeable scars. It also helps maintain the shape and appearance of your breast. If you choose to have breast reconstruction, our plastic surgeons work side by side with breast surgeons.

Commitment to excellent care
Our breast cancer team builds your care plan with you at the center. You’ll have access to a team of specialists, advanced treatments and innovative technologies. We also prioritize your quality of life, providing supportive cancer care [DM2] and resources at every step. This commitment to you is why the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancers recognized us as a Center of Excellence.

Cancer genetic testing and counseling

We offer cancer genetic testing and counseling for breast cancer patients. This can help determine targeted treatments for your specific type of breast cancer. It can also predict how you’ll respond to treatment and your risks for recurrence.

Next Steps for Cancer Care

To access our services or treatment, you need a referral from your primary physician or a specialist. If you don't have a primary care physician and would like a pre-screening, take the proactive step of scheduling an appointment with one of our providers to initiate the referral process and ensure timely access to necessary cancer care services.
