Overview
Recreational therapy at Cape Fear Valley Health focuses on enhancing the well-being of individuals through purposeful activities and therapeutic interventions. Our trained recreational therapists use a variety of techniques to improve physical, emotional, cognitive, and social functioning. By engaging in recreational activities, patients can achieve greater independence and enhance their quality of life.
Types of Recreational Therapy Treatments
Physical Activity and Sports
Physical Activity and Sports: Engaging in adaptive sports and fitness activities helps build strength, coordination, and endurance—while boosting confidence and motivation. Recreational Therapists are skilled in modifying and adapting exercise and sports to meet the individual needs of the patient.
Creative Arts
Creative Arts: Through painting, drawing, crafts, and other art forms, patients express themselves, process emotions, and reduce anxiety in a calming, supportive environment.
Leisure Counseling and Education
Leisure Counseling and Education: Patients learn laws and rights in relation to accessibility; the benefits of recreation; problem solving techniques; community accessibility; self-advocacy; community resources; and so much more. Our goal is for our patients to leave our facility having all the necessary tools and education to return to their recreation and leisure interests.
Community Reintegration
Community Reintegration: Group-based community outings promote the real-world application of skills learned in previous therapy sessions. From social-interaction to physical mobility, and even stigma-management, these outings provide patients with the opportunity to practice everything they have learned prior to discharging home.
