Your Nose Reconstruction Team

From your first call, you’ll be supported by a dedicated team of experts, including plastic surgeons, licensed practical nurses, and medical staff.

What to Expect With Nose Reconstruction

Nose reconstruction, or rhinoplasty, typically takes between one and two hours. During the procedure, you will remain awake but you’ll be under local anesthesia which will numb the procedure area, so you won't experience any discomfort. Afterward, you can return home to begin your recovery.

The procedure begins with your surgeon making incisions between or inside your nostrils to separate the skin from the underlying cartilage or bone. This allows for the careful reshaping of the nose’s structure.

Depending on your desired outcome, if additional cartilage is needed to achieve the optimal shape, your surgeon may harvest a small amount from your ear or the deeper parts of your nose. In cases requiring more substantial restructuring, an implant or bone graft may be used.

After surgery, a plastic or metal splint will be placed on your nose to support and maintain its new shape as it heals. Internal nasal packs or splints may be used to stabilize the septum, ensuring correct alignment and a comfortable healing process.

Nose Reconstruction Consultation

Your Cape Fear Valley Health plastic surgeon will discuss your treatment goals and carefully evaluate your nose and facial structure. They will then make a recommendation based on your desired results and develop your personalized treatment plan.

Are You a Candidate For Nose Reconstruction?

Nose reconstruction, or rhinoplasty, may be an excellent choice for men and women who would like to enhance their facial appearance or correct functional issues.

Additional considerations:

  • The ideal candidate is in good overall health
  • Alcohol increases the risk of excess bleeding and should be avoided for at least two weeks before surgery
  • Nicotine increases the risk of blood clots and other complications. Patients should be nicotine-free for three to six weeks before and after surgery

Nose Reconstruction Recovery and Results

After the procedure, you should:

  • Plan to take one to two weeks off work to focus on recovery.
  • Ensure you get plenty of rest.
  • Refrain from strenuous activities for about six weeks to prevent complications.
  • You should also avoid the following:
    • Blowing your nose.
    • Excessive chewing.
    • Laughing, smiling or other expressions that require facial muscle strain.
    • Pulling clothing over your head.
    • Resting eyeglasses on your nose.
    • Vigorous tooth brushing.

After surgery, it’s normal to experience mild bruising and swelling, which typically subside within one to two weeks. Most patients are pleased with their results within a year.

Nose Reconstruction Risks

Like all surgeries, a nose reconstruction involves a certain degree of risk. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, serious complications are rare. To minimize risk, follow the instructions and advice of your plastic surgeon.

Some risks and complications could include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Infection
  • Numbness or pain
  • Poor wound healing
  • Skin discoloration or swelling
