What Is a Neck Lift?
Your neck can be one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Why? As we get older, the skin on our neck can lose its natural elasticity, causing it to sag and appear loose. A neck lift tightens and smooths the skin, achieving a youthful, slim, and sculpted neck

What to Expect With a Neck Lift
A neck lift procedure generally takes between two and three hours and is performed under general anesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain. Once the procedure is complete, you can return home and start enjoying the positive changes.
Your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind the ears and under the chin. Through these incisions, your surgeon can perform liposuction, remove excess skin, and tighten neck muscles.
Some patients combine their neck lift with a brow lift or Botox for a more dramatic aesthetic enhancement.
The ultimate goal is to re-establish natural lines and anatomy to achieve a more youthful and contoured neck appearance.
Neck Lift Consultation
Your Cape Fear Valley Health plastic surgeon will discuss your treatment goals and carefully evaluate your neck area. They will then make a recommendation based on your desired results and develop your personalized treatment plan.
Are You a Candidate For a Neck Lift?
Patients who choose a neck lift often feel like their neck doesn’t match their facial appearance. Common concerns include excess wrinkling of the neck skin or a double chin.
Additional considerations:
- The ideal candidate is in good overall health.
- Alcohol increases the risk of excess bleeding and should be avoided for at least two weeks before surgery.
- Nicotine increases the risk of blood clots and other complications. Patients should be nicotine-free for three to six weeks before and after surgery.
Neck Lift Recovery and Results
After a neck lift procedure, you should:
- Plan to take one to two weeks off work to focus on recovery.
- Ensure you get plenty of rest.
- Wear a compression bandage for two weeks to reduce swelling and promote healing.
- Avoid strenuous activities for six to eight weeks to prevent complications.
It’s normal to experience some discomfort, mild bruising and swelling, which typically subside in one to two weeks. Most patients are pleased with results within three months.
Neck Lift Risks
Like all surgeries, a neck lift involves a certain degree of risk. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, serious complications are rare. To minimize risk, follow the instructions and advice of your plastic surgeon.
Some risks and complications could include:
- Scarring
- Infection
- Nerve injury
