Explore the benefits of eye lift surgery at Cape Fear Valley Health, designed to rejuvenate and enhance your eye contours. Our expert surgeons tailor procedures to meet your unique aesthetic goals.

What Is an Eye Lift?

Years of sun exposure, squinting and hereditary factors can significantly affect your eyes, leading to saggy skin on your upper and lower eyelids or pesky “bags” under the eyes. An eye lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a straightforward procedure that rejuvenates your eyes by restoring a more open appearance, refining contours and smoothing the eyelid skin.

What to Expect With an Eye Lift

An eye lift, or blepharoplasty, is a precise procedure that typically takes about two hours. During this time, you’ll remain awake but won’t experience any discomfort because you’ll be under the local anesthesia applied to numb the treatment areas.

Your plastic surgeon will make incisions within the natural folds of your upper and lower eyelids to minimize visible scarring. Excess skin, along with fatty tissues that contribute to puffiness and "bags" under the eyes, will be removed. The incisions will then be closed with sutures to promote optimal healing. You will be able to return home the same day.

Eye Lift Consultation

Your Cape Fear Valley Health plastic surgeon will discuss your treatment goals and carefully evaluate your eyes. They will then make a recommendation based on your desired results and develop your personalized treatment plan.

Are You a Candidate For Eye Lift?

Eye lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, is primarily recommended for individuals over the age of 30 who are looking to enhance their facial aesthetics. This procedure is particularly effective for those who wish to address signs of aging around the eyes such as sagging eyelids, under-eye bags, and wrinkles that may  give a tired appearance.

Additional considerations:

  • The ideal candidate is in good overall health
  • Alcohol increases the risk of excess bleeding and should be avoided for at least two weeks before surgery
  • Nicotine increases the risk of blood clots and other complications. Patients should be nicotine-free for three to six weeks before and after surgery

Eye Lift Recovery and Results

Following your eye lift procedure, you will need to return to the clinic for suture removal, which typically occurs on day two and day five post-procedure. These appointments are vital as they allow your surgeon to monitor your healing process and ensure that recovery is progressing as expected.

After the procedure, you should:
•    Plan to take two weeks off work to focus on recovery.
•    Ensure you get plenty of rest.
•    Avoid strenuous activities for about two to three weeks to prevent complications.
•    Sleep with your head raised for five days to reduce swelling.
•    Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sunlight and to reduce squinting.

After the surgery, it’s normal to experience discomfort, mild bruising, and swelling which typically subside within two weeks. Most patients are pleased with their results within one to two months.

Eye Lift Risks

Like all surgeries, an eye lift involves a certain degree of risk. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, serious complications are rare. To minimize risk, follow the instructions and advice of your plastic surgeon.

Some risks and complications could include:
•    Difficulty in closing your eyes
•    Infection
•    Numbness, pain or dry eyes
•    Sensitivity to sunlight or other bright lights
•    Scarring
•    Temporary vision changes
