What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical option we offer at Cape Fear Valley Health. It’s ideal for people who have stubborn pockets of fat on their belly or other areas. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2010, CoolSculpting is an effective alternative to traditional body contouring.
The procedure uses advanced technology to freeze unwanted fat cells, which are eventually passed from the body, resulting in a slimmer, smoother figure.

What to Expect With CoolSculpting
A CoolSculpting session takes about an hour. It’s a painless treatment, so you won’t need anesthesia and can go home right after the procedure.
Your plastic surgeon will use a handheld device attached to the CoolSculpting console. The device suctions a targeted area on your body, and cooling plates begin freezing fat cells below the skin. The fat cells crystallize and are eventually passed from the body, while surrounding tissues remain unaffected.
CoolSculpting eliminates about 20% of the fat cells in targeted areas. The remaining tissues reassemble to create a smoother contour. Because CoolSculpting permanently eliminates fat cells, the results are long-lasting.
CoolSculpting Consultation
Your Cape Fear Valley Health plastic surgeon will discuss your treatment goals and carefully evaluate your body. They will then make a recommendation based on your desired results and develop your personalized treatment plan.
Are You a Candidate For CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is intended to reshape your body, not cause you to lose a large amount of weight. If you have significant weight or extra skin, consider liposuction or a tummy tuck.
Procedures work best for patients who:
- Are not pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering from chronic pain or fatigue.
- Desire results but are wary of a surgical procedure involving incisions and anesthesia.
- Don’t have time to recover from a plastic surgery procedure.
- Have specific areas they want to target, such as retained fatty deposits in the midsection following pregnancy.
- Want a relatively painless procedure.
CoolSculpting Recovery and Results
After CoolSculpting, you can return to work and all your favorite activities immediately. Soreness, mild bruising, and numbness may last for a few days. You’ll see results within two to three weeks, and the results are permanent, unless you gain weight after the treatment.
CoolSculpting Risks
Like all treatments, CoolSculpting involves a certain degree of risk. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, serious complications are rare. To minimize risk, follow the instructions and advice of your plastic surgeon.
Some risks and complications could include:
- Bruising
- Pain
- Skin sensitivity
- Swelling
