What Are Chin Implants?
A chin implant is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the chin. This safe procedure adds definition to the jaw, balances the appearance of the nose and other facial features, and enhances the appearance of the neck to provide a more proportionate facial appearance.
A chin implant is often combined with a face lift, neck lift, nose reconstruction, or eye lift to achieve a dramatic overall enhancement.

What to Expect With Chin Implants
The implant is made from FDA-approved, medical-grade silicone plastic. Chin implants come in different sizes and shapes to fit individual needs.
The chin implant procedure typically takes 1-2 hours. You will be awake but will not feel pain, as you’ll be under local anesthesia, which numbs the area. After a brief recovery in our office, you will be able to return home.
Your surgeon will make a small incision either inside the mouth or under the chin to insert the implant. The implant is then positioned and secured to enhance your chin’s shape.
Chin Implant Consultation
Your Cape Fear Valley Health plastic surgeon will discuss your treatment goals and carefully evaluate your chin and face. They will then make a recommendation based on your desired results and develop your personalized treatment plan.
Are You a Candidate For Chin Implants?
A chin implant procedure may be an excellent option for men or women with a:
- Heavy or drooping neck
- Overly pointy or square chin
- Prominent nose
- Small or recessed chin
Additional considerations for chin implants:
- The ideal candidate is in good overall health.
- Alcohol increases the risk of excess bleeding and should be avoided for at least two weeks before surgery.
- Nicotine increases the risk of blood clots and other complications. Patients should be nicotine-free for three to six weeks before and after surgery.
Chin Implants Recovery and Results
If the sutures are placed inside the mouth, they will dissolve naturally within about 10 days. Surface stitches are typically removed within one week by your surgeon.
You'll need to wear the bandages provided by your surgeon for two to three days after the procedure to help manage swelling and ensure proper healing.
After the procedure, you should:
- Plan to take one to two weeks off work to focus on recovery.
- Ensure you get plenty of rest.
- Avoid strenuous activities for about two to three weeks to prevent complications.
Mild bruising and swelling can last between two and six weeks. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication to help manage discomfort.
You should see results of your chin implants within two to three months as swelling subsides and your new chin contour becomes more apparent.
Regular follow-up visits with your surgeon will help monitor your progress and address any concerns you may have during the recovery period.
Chin Implant Risks
Like all surgeries, chin implants involve a certain degree of risk. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, serious complications are rare. To minimize risk, follow the instructions and advice of your plastic surgeon.
Some risks and complications could include:
- Infection
- Implant protrusion through surgical site
- Nerve injury
- Numbness or pain
- Scarring
