We understand facing breast cancer can feel scary and lonely. But at Cape Fear Valley Health, you’ll have a team in your corner every step of the way.
Our Approach to Breast Cancer Care
When you have a breast cancer diagnosis, we know you don’t want to wait to start your care. Our goal is to get you in as quickly as possible.
At your first appointment, you’ll typically meet with a breast cancer surgeon who will:
- Explain the type and stage of your breast cancer
- Guide you through your treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, radiation therapy and more
- Discuss our team approach to your care, including the specialists involved and how we all work together
Your Care Team
Your breast cancer care team may include breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons and others.
Your team will meet regularly, bringing together their shared expertise to drive your care. This also ensures your whole team is on the same page. So, whenever you see any provider, they’ll focus on your immediate needs — rather than getting up to speed on your care plan.
One of the most important members of your team will be your nurse navigator. They’ll make sure you’re getting everything you need, exactly when you need it.
Your navigator will:
- Schedule and coordinate your appointments
- Address any challenges, such as insurance complications, scheduling and more
- Connect you with any cancer support services, as needed
- Follow up with you after appointments
- Check in if you miss an appointment, asking if you’re OK and what we can do to help
