About William Dickson Schaefer, MD

Dr. W. Dickson Schaefer practices general orthopaedic surgery with a special interest in joint reconstruction. A native of Fayetteville, he completed his training and residency at Wake Forest University. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Schaefer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Schaefer joined Fayetteville Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in August of 2001. He has a special interest in trauma surgery and reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He has received additional training in unicompartmental arthroplasty of the knee and has extensive experience in partial knee replacement. In fact, he performed the first partial knee replacement surgery in this region. His volume of partial knee replacements is one of the highest in eastern North Carolina performing approximately 100 per year.

Performing approximately 400 joint replacements a year, he is one of the highest volume joint reconstruction surgeons in the area.

Dr. Schaefer has served in the United States Army Reserve since his commissioning in 1996. He holds the rank of Colonel. Twice deployed to Germany in support of operations in the Middle East, he has also served in a Combat Support Hospital in Iraq.

Dr. Schaefer formerly served on Board of Trustees of Cape Fear Valley Medical System and Bladen County Hospital. He is also former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Fayetteville Academy and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, Methodist University.
