About William Dickson Schaefer, MD

Dr. W. Dickson Schaefer practices general orthopedic surgery with a special interest in joint reconstruction. A native of Fayetteville, he completed his training and residency at Wake Forest University. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Schaefer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Dr. Schaefer joined Fayetteville Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in August of 2001. He has a special interest in trauma surgery and reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He has received additional training in uni-compartmental arthroplasty of the knee and has extensive experience in partial knee replacement. In fact, he performed the first partial knee replacement surgery in this region. His volume of partial knee replacements is one of the highest in eastern North Carolina performing approximately 150 per year.

Performing approximately 450 joint replacements a year, he is one of the highest volume joint reconstruction surgeons in the area.

Dr. Schaefer holds the rank of Colonel in the United States Army Reserve since his commissioning in 1996. Twice deployed to Germany in support of operations in the Middle East, he has also served in a Combat Support Hospital in Iraq.

Dr. Schaefer is former Chairman of the Board of Trustees and currently on the Board of Trustees at Fayetteville Academy. He also currently serves as the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees with Methodist University. He formerly served on Board of Trustees of Cape Fear Valley Medical System and Bladen County Hospital.
