Deren Bagsby, MD

Dr. Deren Bagsby specializes in Standard and Advanced Joint Replacement for Fayetteville Orthopedics. He is the only fellowship trained joint replacement surgeon in this part of North Carolina. Since starting practice in North Carolina in 2019, Dr. Bagsby has completed thousands of primary and revision total joint replacements. He performs all of his hip replacements through the revolutionary direct anterior approach. This approach utilizes an incision on the front of the hip that allows the joint to be replaced without detaching any tendons, thereby reducing recovery time, improving functional outcomes, and enhancing patient satisfaction. Dr. Bagsby is so proficient in this approach, he teaches it to other surgeons across the country.

Dr. Bagsby also performs partial knee replacement, which, in selected patients, can result in better functionality, fewer complications and a higher patient satisfaction rating. Dr. Bagsby has revised numerous hip and knee replacements for varying causes, including pain, infection, loosening, and instability, to improve patient’s function and quality of life.

A native of Cincinnati, Dr. Bagsby completed his medical school training at Indiana University, where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. During his residency, he trained in multiple aspects of orthopedic surgery with an interest in fracture care and total joint replacement. He also completed numerous research studies on joint replacement, which were published in prestigious medical journals. 

He is a faculty member for Campbell University and the Cape Fear Valley schools of medicine. He works extensively with The Womack – Cape Fear Valley orthopedic surgery residency program, training, young surgeons in joint replacement.

While Dr. Bagsby has worked extensively in the Midwest, he is now happy to call North Carolina his home. His wife, Dr. Elizabeth Bagsby, works for Advanced Pain and Spine, splitting her time between Clayton and Fayetteville. In 2023 they welcomed their daughter Charlotte Marie and couldn’t be happier. Outside of work, he enjoys the outdoors and is an avid weightlifter, runner, and cyclist.
