What is a Thyroid Disorder?

The thyroid gland produces the thyroid hormone, affecting a person’s physical energy, temperature, weight, and mood. Thyroid disease, or thyroid disorders, is a medical condition that keeps your thyroid from making the right amount of hormones.

When to Seek Care for Thyroid Disorders

Your primary care doctor may refer you or your loved one to our endocrinologists, dietitian, or certified nurse practitioner. A referral from your primary care provider is necessary prior to your first visit with us.

Consulting with a thyroid specialist when you are first diagnosed with a thyroid condition may be useful. If you are concerned about any symptoms related to thyroid disease, you are welcome to come to our practice. You may need to confirm your diagnosis and make sure you understand your options to manage the disease.

People with thyroid conditions can develop different complications. Left untreated, these complications can interfere with your quality of life. At Cape Fear Valley Health, we help patients learn how to treat and prevent complications related to the disease.

Types of Thyroid Disorders

Allergies can manifest in various forms, each with its own set of triggers and characteristics. The most common types of allergies include:

  • Hyperthyroidism: Also called overactive thyroid. The disorder occurs when the thyroid gland makes more thyroid hormones than your body’s needs.
  • Hypothyroidism: Also called underactive thyroid. The condition happens when the thyroid gland doesn’t make enough thyroid hormones to meet your body’s needs.
  • Thyroid Nodules: A solid or fluid-filled lump that forms within your thyroid. A majority are benign (noncancerous).
  • Graves’ Disease: An autoimmune disorder that can cause hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid.
  • Hashimoto’s Disease: An autoimmune disorder that can cause hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid.
