Obstetrics and Gynecology Education Goals
During training, under the direct supervision of an attending physician, the trainee will attain a level of competence that will qualify them to become a certified physician in OB/GYN or allow the trainee to seek specialized training in the field of OB/GYN. Satisfactory levels of accomplishment must be demonstrated in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective aspects of patient management. Upon satisfactory completion of the OB/GYN residency program at our institution, the trainee at each level should by the end of each year:
PGY 1
- Acquire fundamentals of patient assessment and management, including the management of intrapartum and postpartum patient care.
- Demonstrate competency in abdominal and pelvic anatomy and physiology.
- Perform uncomplicated vaginal deliveries and primary Cesarean sections, circumcisions, tubal ligations and basic gynecologic procedures.
- Learn basic surgical techniques, preoperative and postoperative care.
- Acquire basic skills in ultrasound.
- Gain basic skills in the care of ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology patients.
- Begin to develop the ability to serve as a consultant to other specialties, including the ability to use evidence-based medicine in making recommendations.
- Become adept at efficient and effective triage of gynecologic problems seen in the emergency room setting.
- Conduct research in obstetrics and gynecology.
- Communicate as a professional with patients, hospital staff, students, fellow residents and attending staff.
PGY 2
- Manage normal and complicated antepartum and intrapartum obstetric patients.
- Perform normal and complicated operative deliveries, repeat and emergent Cesarean sections.
- Perform normal and uncomplicated major and minor gynecologic surgeries.
- Gain additional experience and competence in obstetric ultrasound.
- Gain experience in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI).
- Learn essentials of REI.
- Gain experience in the full range of family-planning services.
- Develop the ability to coordinate patients through clinic, hospital and discharge.
- Demonstrate increasing proficiency with basic surgical skills, ability to obtain and complete clinical history and physical examination.
- Communicate more effectively with patient care team; begin to assume leadership position within the team, show foresight and planning regarding patient care and use concise and effective presentation.
- Conduct research in obstetrics and gynecology.
PGY 3
- Function as a senior resident with increased responsibility.
- Perform complicated operative deliveries and obstetric procedures.
- Antepartum management of high-risk pregnancies.
- Participate in focused experience on gynecologic oncology.
- Refine operative skills in gynecologic surgery, including minimally invasive surgery.
- Conduct research in obstetrics and gynecology.
- Refine skills in gynecologic and obstetric ultrasound.
- Coordinate patient care to include appropriate evaluation and treatment by other health care professionals and consultants.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of different specialists and other health care professionals in overall patient management.
PGY 4
- Manage all aspects of patient care under faculty supervision.
- Supervise and teach junior residents and medical students.
- Perform complicated deliveries and advanced gynecologic procedures.
- Interact with consultants and services that request obstetrics or gynecology consultation.
- Acquire an understanding of uro-gynecologic testing and perform uro-gynecologic procedures.
- Become comfortable and able to consult in gynecologic oncology.
- Understand and exhibit high ethical standards for medical practice; identify, analyze and respond effectively to ethical problems/issues that arise frequently in the practice of medicine..
- Master all essential skills/techniques as outlined by the curriculum.
- Achieve full competence (knowledge, skills, judgment) to be prepared and ready for OB/GYN boards.
