Infection Prevention & Control

Hospital infection prevention and control is a rapidly changing, fast-paced and endlessly fascinating field. The roles and responsibilities of the infection preventionist (IP) are expanding and touch every area and specialty in healthcare. Hospital IPs investigate cases of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) and work closely with clinicians to implement changes in behaviors and processes which result in reduced infection rates and keep patients safe. IPs help protect patients and staff by working with public health partners on the control of emerging and existing infectious diseases, by developing education for staff and community members and by providing oversight on construction and renovation projects. A career in infection prevention and control is an opportunity to prevent infection and save lives. New IPs are provided SPICE training by UNC and an APIC membership. Board certification (CIC) is strongly encouraged after 2 years in the IP role and supported by provision of the CIC Study Guide and bi-weekly peer study groups.

Candidates: Nursing, public health, epidemiology and microbiology experience.
